Om Shanti

The universal mantra of peace

ॐ शान्ति शान्ति शान्ति
Om Shanti Shanti Shanti

Om Shanti is one of the most widely recognized mantras, invoking peace at three levels. Shanti means "peace" in Sanskrit, and its threefold repetition addresses peace in three dimensions: individual, collective, and universal—or physical, mental, and spiritual.

The formula often appears at the conclusion of Hindu prayers and Vedic chants. Om represents the primordial sound, the vibration from which all creation emerges. Shanti brings the sacred invocation back to rest, establishing peace as both origin and destination.

Some interpretations view the three recitations as removing three types of suffering: adhyatmika (suffering from one's own body-mind), adhibhautika (suffering from other beings), and adhidaivika (suffering from natural forces or fate). Others see it as peace for speaker, listener, and all existence.

The simplicity and universality of Om Shanti have made it a bridge across traditions. It appears in yoga classes worldwide, interfaith gatherings, and secular contexts as a benediction. Its power lies in the recognition that peace is not merely absence of conflict but a positive quality to be invoked, cultivated, and radiated.
